Graphic Design Student Question Friday: How do I work towards becoming a successful designer as a student?

Graphic Design Student Question Friday

I get the question above at least once a year. I always tell me students, there are about 8 graphic design schools in the Cincinnati area, all of them are at least graduating 10-25 students a semester. There are only going to be about 25% of these students getting jobs.

“What is the secret then?” they ask me. (I am a very modest person)

I tell them, “Let me give you the keys to my castle. You know how I became semi successful?”

“You are extremely gifted!” They state.

I laugh, “I am not gifted at all. I just work harder than everyone else. When you are playing video games, I am working. When you are out drinking with your friends. I am working. When you sleep, I dream of art.”

They stare at me blankly, “I don’t do drugs, drink only socially, art is my addiction.”

There is a reason why I am answering this question this week,  recently one of my hard working students has made it to the final rounds of a competition. She is one of those hard workers that is going to make it in this industry. She could use your help though, Please go to the following website and vote for: Vote for entry: Gina — Entry #174 In the Cabernet Sauvignon.

It was a student project I gave in package design. She is a really amazing student that deserves to win the $5,000 scholarship. Please pass this on.
