10 Best Magazines for Graphic Designers, Art Directors and Print Designers, Part 1
by Mitchell Eismont
(These aren’t in any order).
1. Print Magazine
Print magazine is one of the oldest graphic design magazines on the market. It was founded in 1940. I of course am semi partial to this magazine because a professor of mine used to be the Art Director of this magazine, Steven Brower. Print is a bimonthly magazine, that talks about all aspects of the graphic design industry.
2. How Magazine
How Magazine, is also a bimonthly magazine. This magazine is not as old as Print Magazine and was launched around 1985. Oddly enough I didn’t know this was a Cincinnati based magazine until I move to Cincinnati and applied for a contest. I like this magazine because they have a lot of contests and awards. It is a nice way to get your design recognized.
3. Communication Arts
According to outside sources (not going to say what the source is because I make fun of people for using this website), Communication Arts is the biggest trade journal for graphic designers. This is also a bi-monthly magazine that has 6 contests a year. If you are one of those artists that like to look at other’s artwork for inspiration, this is the magazine for you.
4. Computer Arts
This is a monthly magazine for designer, illustrators and digital arts professionals. They showcase some of the best design professionals from all around the world, also giving tutorials and helpful hints on the latest design software.
CMYK Magazine comes out quarterly. It has a lot of design competitions for students as well as working professionals and freelance graphic designers. The cover design on this is always amazing.
Stay tuned for part II of this article coming in a few days.
